OMAR JR is the unlikely brainchild of El Nicolas from Casablanca Drivers and Martin Luther BB King from Naive New Beaters. But it’s also the namesake of a flamboyant man with a dazzling smile and agave-blue eyes: Omar del Diego de la Paz Junior—born in Japan, now living in Mexico’s Guerrero province. The duo pays tribute to this cultless guru by founding the world’s very first Mezcal Pop band.
Their music? A heady, undulating blend of sharp fuzz guitars, synth buildups as wild as they are ecstatic, beefed-up drum machines, and basslines as direct as a lucha libre wrestler’s grip. Through this sonic cocktail, OMAR JR tells the tale of their spiritual father’s surreal journey from Japan to Mexico—one groove at a time.
